History

The history of Centenary United Methodist Church can first be traced back to the formation of the Methodist Society of Long-A-Coming in 1830 when Joseph & Elizabeth Thackara and Conklyn Mayhew were interested in forming a Sunday School. The Society met in various buildings throughout Berlin before erecting their first church building in 1840 in what now houses the Berlin Boro Senior Citizens. Church services and Sunday school was held here until 1867, when the building was conveyed to the Baptist Church of Berlin.

In 1866 new land was purchased and a new church building was erected and dedicated on February 28, 1867. At this time, the church also collected dues to purchase a bell for the church. Through the years, even to the present time, this bell has summoned generation after generation to worship and study, and its rich tones have won the hearts of the Long-A-Coming and the present Berlin community. After the formation of the Berlin Fire Company in 1909, the church bell was used to sound fire alarms to the town.

During the 100th anniversary of Methodism in the United States, in 1886, the church became Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church of Long-A-Coming.

In 1918 the members of the church dug out the basement of the church and made the first basketball court in the community and a recreational center for the children. Centenary has continued this commitment to children throughout its history.

In 1958 the church purchased additional land behind the church to build an education building, which was completed in 1960. The first floor consists of classrooms, while the second floor houses a stage, auditorium, and kitchen. This building still holds many church events and meetings to this day, and is home to our Centenary United Methodist Nursery School, which was founded in 1973 and has taught and served 3 & 4 year old children for nearly 50 years.

Our church got its current name when the merger of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church was formalized in 1968 and we became the Centenary United Methodist Church.

Centenary will continue to serve the congregation and the community for many years to come. We hope you will join us!
